Chris and Clare’s Zero Carbon Lifestyle Home

Please Note: To ensure that all visitors get a chance to see all the features and talk to the owners, tours of the EcoHome will start every hour on the hour only (e.g.: 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm).

From the historic, join us to explore a home of the future. The owners have meticulously designed a home that exhibits the latest technology for resource and energy efficiency and delivers unparalleled comfort. With views of the beautiful Rideau River, this revolutionary home boasts a solar off-grid system that keeps critical systems functioning when the utility fails.

The home’s grid-tied solar system produces not only enough for the house itself; but also covers local transportation with the home’s electric vehicle.  A future development will generate and store sufficient thermal energy for the hot water and space heating for the entire year.  Its excess heat will extend a greenhouse’s growing season and food will be stored in the house’s root cellar. This home not only allows the residents to live carbon-free, it also increases their resilience in a time of uncertain energy costs and availability.

This unique project is nearing completion.  Occupied since Christmas 2015, it has provided consistent comfort through the coldest winter days and the long stretches of summer 2016’s heat waves with miniscule amounts of energy and often without any active heating or cooling.  Ask about the frigid winter week when the house’s heating never came on, or about how the house’s cooling system uses the energy equivalent of a three LED bulbs. This house has a wide range of resource and energy conservation features that make living in it much easier to reduce one’s environmental impacts.

Here are just a few of the house’s features:

  • Extremely efficient – built to the Passive House Standard
  • 7 kW grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) system to offset electric car and house consumption
  • 5 kW off-Grid PV system for uninterrupted power supply to critical systems
  • Healthy and consistent indoor air quality
  • Solar water and space heating (to be started in the near future) with building-integrated Seasonal Thermal Energy storage
  • Extremely efficient radiant floor heating & cooling with ground loop heat exchange

The home-owners will be on hand to answer all of your questions!
