Tucked down a little back lane on the island at Burritt’s Rapids are two delightful adjoining Riverside gardens. Owned by a father and daughter, these much loved gardens reflect the personalities and gardening passions of the owners. Wander through Howard Jefferys’ lush, green shade garden and admire the variety of hostas, iris and nine-bark. This lovely zen-like garden boasts the tallest pine trees on the island. Wander down to the dock and enjoy the peaceful views of the Rideau Canal and the gardens of Burritt’s Farm across the river.

As a special treat for the visitor, Mr. Jefferys has graciously offered to open the studio of his late wife Jacquie. A talented water-colourist, her paintings of local flora and historic homes are a beautifully rendered.

The connecting property delights the eye with a profusion of perennials with a sea of blue forget-me- nots, dahlias, iris, bleeding hearts and peonies. The owner, Jane Jefferys, has created charming “rooms” with a spa area, rock garden, decorative pathways and a beautiful waterfront. A self-taught gardener, she loves the connection with the earth and derives inspiration from the colours and moods in her garden which she reflects in her art.

A talented multi-media artist, Ms. Jefferys will be displaying her art throughout the garden. It will be a rare opportunity to enjoy both of these beautiful gardens and the art of these two very talented ladies.
